Skill checks

Sometimes, a character needs to perform a challenging task by taking a skill check.

Performing a skill check

To check a skill, the player takes the rank of the skill and adds the rank of the appropriate attribute to be used. Then the player then rolls two die where one die adds to this number while the other subtracts. The type of die that a character uses is determined by age.

  • Ages 0 to 11 – 4-sided die (d4)
  • Ages 12 to 15 – 6-sided die (d6)
  • Ages 16 to 19 – 8-sided die (d8)
  • Ages 20+ – 10-sided die (d10)

On average, the two dice will tend towards cancelling eachother out and so characters should be expected to perform overcome difficulties which are close to their ranks or below them.

Example : John tries to shoot bullseye with his rifle on the shooting range. The difficulty to make the shot is 8. John has an agility of 3 and a shooting skill of 2 which, summed up, is 5. John rolls +1d6/-1d6 and scores a 6 and a 3. Adding 6 and subtracting 3 means John can add 3 to the final result. The total score is 8. John just made the shot!

To reduce the number of rolls during a game, characters can often choose to simply to Not Roll™.

Not Roll

Characters don’t always have to roll when trying something. Not rolling represents making a medium amount of effort and challenges that a character can overcome by Not Rolling generally represents automatic successes for which there is no need to roll.

At the GM’s discretion, Not Rolling is mostly appropriate in low risk / low excitement scenarios and should generally not be used for attack rolls, etc.

Skill check difficulty

The difficulty of a task is given by a number.

1 Autonomous task (breathing)
2 Autonomous task (walking)
3 Instinctive task (opening a door)
4 Simple task (climbing a low fence, riding a bike)
5 Regular task (jumping over a narrow stream)
